Reason Upon Love

Open my grave when I am dead, and thou shall
see a cloud of smoke rising out from it;
then shall thou know that the fire still burns
in my dead heart -- yea, it has set
my very winding-sheet alight.

If the scent of her hair were to blow across my dust
when I had been dead a hundred years,
my mouldering bones would rise and
come dancing out of the tomb.

I have estimated the influence of Reason upon Love
and found that it is like that of a raindrop upon
the ocean, which makes one little mark
upon the water's face and disappears.

- Hafiz

As 19th century Hafiz translator Gertrude Bell has observed, "These are the utterances of a great poet, the imaginative interpreter of the heart of man; they are not of one age, or of another, but for all time." Hafiz of Shiraz (Khwaja Shams ud-Din Hafiz-i Shirazi, 1326-1390) is widely recognized as the pre-eminent master of the Persian ghazal form. The lyrical beauty of his poetry has been celebrated by people around the world for centuries.

Hafiz is one of the great Sufi poets, in the tradition of Rumi. In his native land of Persia (modern Iran), where his Divan is revered to an extent rivaled only by the Qur'an, the beauty of Hafiz's lyrics has always been most appreciated when accompanied by music. His words are not so much poetry as songs.

Photo: Nasir al-Mulk, The "Pink Mosque" of Iran.

When you see a mosque on the outside, you expect it to be just like any other on the inside right? From the outside, the Nasir al-Mulk Mosque in Shiraz, Iran, seems like a fairly traditional house of worship. Actually, it's hiding a gorgeously colorful secret. It features a rather uncommon element for a mosque: stained glass.

If you catch the early morning light, you'll witness a gorgeous play of light on the floor and on the walls, a falling of multiple rainbows on the Persian carpets. It was built to catch the morning sun, so if you plan on visiting it at noon it will be too late to catch the daily surreal episode.

Besides the richly colored stained-glasses, you'll find in there gorgeously painted, intricate arches, niches and painted geometrical tiles. In fact, because of the those rose-colored tiles, the mosque is also known as the "Pink Mosque".

In very simple terms: we exist, and we want to make the most of it. And for the most part, when we can, we listen to our heart, and the heart says to be content, to be fulfilled.

Of all the things that we can be, of all the things that we could achieve: contentment. There is a yearning, there is a want, to somehow get to that, to achieve that.

That cause is the noblest cause on the face of this earth.
